Architekturstars

Fall Semester 2002

At the same time as architecture has become a topic of discussion among the general public, the figure of the star, originally situated in popular culture, has entered the field of architecture. What are the social and culture-specific developments that underlie the star system in architecture? What is a star anyway, and why do we need them? And what does the star system teach us about how the field of architecture works? Based on these questions, the phenomenon of the architectural star is explored from different angles. These include an analysis of the star figure in various cultural fields, explanatory approaches that draw on processes affecting society as a whole, and theories on the unique nature of architecture. The course has the character of a research project in which students actively participate. Prerequisites for participation are a willingness to read and discuss texts and to conduct a small research project or interview. Students will be introduced to the relevant research methods.
