Urbane Qualitäten: Ein Handbuch am Beispiel der Metropolitanregion Zürich

Our settlement areas have undergone fundamental changes in recent years. The contrasts between urban, periurban and suburban areas are now obsolete. New functional networks and spatial constellations overlap, permeate and replace existing realities of life.
As part of the National Research Programme NFP 65: “New Urban Quality”, five chairs from the Department of Architecture have come together in the project “Urban Potentials and Strategies in Metropolitan Territories” and developed a new research concept for promoting urban qualities in urban planning and urban development. Based on empirical case studies in the Zurich metropolitan region, the research team has established a selection of relevant urban qualities in contemporary urban regions: centrality, diversity, interaction, accessibility, adaptability and appropriation. The aim is to shift the discussion away from quantitative aspects towards qualitative ones.
As a practice-oriented working tool, this instrument is aimed at planners, architects, students and anyone who is more interested in qualities and potential than in hectare density and utilisation in the current debate on urban development and spatial planning.
