Prof. Christina Schumacher
Christina Schumacher teaches sociology of architecture and planning at the Institute of Architecture, University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, where she is the head of research. She is the founder and co-owner of sofa*p – Sociology for Architecture and Planning. She studied sociology and qualitative methods of social research in Zurich, Bologna and Berlin and conducted research on the profession of architecture and gender at the University of Bern. From 2001 to 2010, she was co-head of the Chair of Sociology at the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich, together with Christian Schmid.
She works as a consultant in planning procedures and is an expert on assessment committees. She chaired the Foundation for Barrier-Free Architecture and continued her education in spatial planning at ETH Zurich (Exposé on Sociology Now! Fields of action for sociological expertise in urban and spatial planning). She is co-president of the association créatrices.ch – Women Shape Switzerland, is involved in the SIA steering group for social sustainability, and is a founding member and board member of the association for social space development SoRa+.
