Prof. Christina Schumacher

Chris­ti­na Schu­ma­cher tea­ches socio­lo­gy of archi­tec­tu­re and plan­ning at the Insti­tu­te of Archi­tec­tu­re, Uni­ver­si­ty of Appli­ed Sci­en­ces and Arts Nor­thwes­tern Switz­er­land, whe­re she is the head of rese­arch. She is the foun­der and co-owner of sofa*p – Socio­lo­gy for Archi­tec­tu­re and Plan­ning. She stu­di­ed socio­lo­gy and qua­li­ta­ti­ve methods of social rese­arch in Zurich, Bolo­gna and Ber­lin and con­duc­ted rese­arch on the pro­fes­si­on of archi­tec­tu­re and gen­der at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Bern. From 2001 to 2010, she was co-head of the Chair of Socio­lo­gy at the Depart­ment of Archi­tec­tu­re at ETH Zurich, tog­e­ther with Chris­ti­an Schmid. 

She works as a con­sul­tant in plan­ning pro­ce­du­res and is an expert on assess­ment com­mit­tees. She chai­red the Foun­da­ti­on for Bar­ri­er-Free Archi­tec­tu­re and con­tin­ued her edu­ca­ti­on in spa­ti­al plan­ning at ETH Zurich (Expo­sé on Socio­lo­gy Now! Fields of action for socio­lo­gi­cal exper­ti­se in urban and spa­ti­al plan­ning). She is co-pre­si­dent of the asso­cia­ti­on créatrices.ch – Women Shape Switz­er­land, is invol­ved in the SIA stee­ring group for social sus­taina­bi­li­ty, and is a foun­ding mem­ber and board mem­ber of the asso­cia­ti­on for social space deve­lo­p­ment SoRa+.
