Dr. Faiq Mari

Faiq Mari is assistant pro­fes­sor at the Depart­ment of Archi­tec­tu­re and Plan­ning at Bir­zeit Uni­ver­si­ty, Pal­es­ti­ne. His work stu­dies the spa­tia­li­ty of Pal­es­ti­ni­an anti­co­lo­ni­al and socio-eco­no­mic strugg­le. Faiq under­took his doc­to­ral stu­dies at ETH Zurich bet­ween 2019 and 2024, whe­re he work­ed with Chris­ti­an Schmid and Phil­ip Ursprung. His dis­ser­ta­ti­on is titled “Masha’ of the Peri­phery: Coll­ec­ti­ve Labor and Pro­per­ty in Pal­es­ti­ni­an Libe­ra­ti­on Strugg­le”. It stu­dies the phe­no­me­non of masha’at, or com­mons, within Pal­es­ti­ni­an strugg­le, and brings tog­e­ther his­to­ri­cal and eth­no­gra­phic methods, a theo­re­ti­cal enga­ge­ment with Mar­xist theo­ry in one of its Arab and Isla­mic vari­ants and bey­ond, as well as spa­ti­al ana­ly­sis of urba­nisati­on and poli­ti­cal eco­no­my in colo­nised Pal­es­ti­ne.

Pri­or to his time in Zurich, Faiq Mari prac­ti­ced archi­tec­tu­re and taught at Bir­zeit and Al-Quds Uni­ver­si­ties. Faiq holds a master’s degree in archi­tec­tu­re histo­ry and theo­ry from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Michi­gan, Ann Arbor, whe­re he was a Ful­bright scho­lar, and holds a bachelor’s degree in archi­tec­tu­ral engi­nee­ring from Bir­zeit Uni­ver­si­ty. He is a foun­ding-mem­ber of the crowd­sour­ced libra­ry Makt­abat Sabil and an edi­tor of the maga­zi­ne Arab Urba­nism. His wri­tin­gs appeared in the Jour­nal of Pal­es­ti­ne Stu­dies, Babel­wad, and other jour­nals and edi­ted volumes.
