Dr. Faiq Mari
Faiq Mari is assistant professor at the Department of Architecture and Planning at Birzeit University, Palestine. His work studies the spatiality of Palestinian anticolonial and socio-economic struggle. Faiq undertook his doctoral studies at ETH Zurich between 2019 and 2024, where he worked with Christian Schmid and Philip Ursprung. His dissertation is titled “Masha’ of the Periphery: Collective Labor and Property in Palestinian Liberation Struggle”. It studies the phenomenon of masha’at, or commons, within Palestinian struggle, and brings together historical and ethnographic methods, a theoretical engagement with Marxist theory in one of its Arab and Islamic variants and beyond, as well as spatial analysis of urbanisation and political economy in colonised Palestine.
Prior to his time in Zurich, Faiq Mari practiced architecture and taught at Birzeit and Al-Quds Universities. Faiq holds a master’s degree in architecture history and theory from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he was a Fulbright scholar, and holds a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering from Birzeit University. He is a founding-member of the crowdsourced library Maktabat Sabil and an editor of the magazine Arab Urbanism. His writings appeared in the Journal of Palestine Studies, Babelwad, and other journals and edited volumes.
