Dr. Hans Hortig

Hans Hor­tig is a land­scape archi­tect and post­doc­to­ral rese­ar­cher with a PhD from ETH Zurich’s Insti­tu­te for Land­scape and Urban Stu­dies (LUS), super­vi­sed by Mili­ca Topa­lo­vić and Chris­ti­an Schmid. He stu­di­ed land­scape archi­tec­tu­re at the Tech­ni­cal Uni­ver­si­ty Ber­lin, ETH Zurich, and the School of Design in Myso­re. His rese­arch exami­nes pro­ces­ses of exten­ded urba­ni­sa­ti­on in agra­ri­an ter­ri­to­ries, resour­ce extra­c­ti­vism, and the ope­ra­tio­na­li­sa­ti­on of ter­ri­to­ry through agro-indus­tri­al pro­duc­tion, with a cur­rent focus on Palm Oil Ter­ri­to­ries in Malaysia.

Sin­ce 2013, he has taught rese­arch and design stu­di­os, elec­ti­ve cour­ses, and super­vi­sed final the­sis pro­jects at the Future Cities Labo­ra­to­ry in Sin­ga­po­re, ETH Zurich, and TU Ber­lin, inte­gra­ting his rese­arch the­mes into design and plan­ning edu­ca­ti­on. He co-cura­ted the lec­tu­re series Ses­si­ons on Ter­ri­to­ry and has con­tri­bu­ted to exhi­bi­ti­ons inclu­ding the Shen­zhen Bien­na­le for Architecture/Urbanism (2015), SAM Basel (2019), and ARCH+ The Gre­at Repair (2023) in Ber­lin. His work has appeared in edi­ted volu­mes and jour­nals such as Archi­the­se, GAM, and ARCH+, and he is co-editing the forth­co­ming book Sin­ga­po­re Bey­ond the Bor­derwith Mili­ca Topa­lo­vić and Karo­li­ne Kost­ka. His awards and fun­ding include the DAAD New Pas­sa­ge to India, ETH Future Cities Labo­ra­to­ry grants, and the Lea­ding House Asia Ear­ly-Care­er Grant.
