Dr. Nitin Bathla

Nitin Bath­la is a trans­di­sci­pli­na­ry rese­ar­cher working at the inter­sec­tion of urban plan­ning, poli­ti­cal eco­lo­gy, socio­lo­gy and the arts. He holds a Doc­to­ra­te in Urban Stu­dies from ETH Zurich and is curr­ent­ly joint­ly affi­lia­ted with ETH Zurich and the Uni­ver­si­ty of Zurich. He is the aut­hor of the award-win­ning book Rese­ar­ching Other­wi­se: Plu­ri­ver­sal Methods for Urban and Land­scape Stu­dies and the cri­ti­cal­ly acclai­med docu­men­ta­ry film Not Just Roads. Nitin ser­ves as an edi­tor for the jour­nal Urban Geo­gra­phy and the Urban Poli­ti­cal Pod­cast, and sits on the edi­to­ri­al boards of the Jour­nal of Urban Poli­ti­cal Eco­lo­gy and Shared Habi­tats. His rese­arch focu­ses on the poli­ti­cal eco­lo­gy of infra­struc­tures and infra­struc­tu­re-led urba­nisati­on in South Asia and Switzerland.

Nitin Bath­la joi­n­ed the Chair of Socio­lo­gy in 2017, when he star­ted his PhD pro­ject “Delhi wit­hout bor­ders: A cri­tique of ever­y­day life under exten­ded urba­nisati­on”. Sin­ce 2022, he has work­ed as post­doc rese­ar­cher and lec­tu­rer at the chair. He was part of the tea­ching team for Socio­lo­gy I & II (2021–2025), and co-taught the fol­lo­wing semi­nars: Hen­ri Lefeb­v­re and the Theo­ry of the Pro­duc­tion of Space (Autumn Semes­ter 2022), Agra­ri­an Ques­ti­ons Under Exten­ded Urba­ni­sa­ti­on (Spring Semes­ters 2022, 2023, and 2024), and the Urban Methods Semi­nar (Spring Semes­ters 2022 and 2023).
