Dr. Philipp Klaus
Philipp Klaus is an economic and social geographer, with focus on research and consulting on sociospatial, socioeconomic and planning processes in urban development. To examine and understand cities, to point out connections, to make comparisons, to follow and describe developments and above all — to ask questions: How are urban societies changing? Why and how are cities eventised? governed? planned? What interests are involved? Who wins, who loses? How can cities become more sustainable and people act more environmentally friendly? How does the competition of cities affect the lives of the inhabitants? Who may live in the city, who may not? What role does culture play in the economy and what role does economy play in culture?
From 2010 to 2016, Philipp Klaus was senior lecturer and researcher at the Chair of Sociology, Department of Architecture, ETH Zurich. He has also taught and researched at other units of ETH Zurich (NSL Planning, ORL-Institute, IVT), and the Geographical Institutes of the Universities of Berne and Zurich. 2005 Dissertation “City, Culture, Innovation” at the University of Zürich. Since 1999 he is the coordinator of the International Network for Urban Research and Action INURA. In2003 he founded the INURA Zurich Institute, together with Richard Wolff (member of the City Council of Zurich 2013–2022) und Christoph Lüthi (since 2005 senior researcher at EAWAG, ETH). Since 2022 owner of K L A R T gmbh. Philipp Klaus is a member of the board and co-president of the Kraftwerk1 housing cooperative, a member of the building commission of Kraftwerk1 Siedlung Koch, and a member of the scientific committee of the journal “Contesti. Città, Territori, Progetti”.
